mic not working in combo jack

I have an asus vivobook s550ca. When i plug my headset's red mic part into the combo jack it comes up as headphones and doesnt work. I bought star tech splitters :http/www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004SP0WAQ/ref=pe_385721_37038051_TE_3p_dp_1 (cable not adapter) but still only my headset's speakers work not the mic. If I try to connect the mic into the splitter and not put the green one in, it still comes up as headphones.

Have you checked Device Manager and the Sound tab in Control Panel to see if anything is up?
