[citation][nom]gm0n3y[/nom]@TA152HI'm not convinced that Blu-ray has 'won' any war. Digital distribution has won (or is winning) the war. I don't own a Blu-ray player and don't think I'll ever buy one. Who wants to replace all of their DVDs (after replacing their VHS tapes) and then replace their Blu-ray discs once the next standard is out? I personally think that hard copies of media are dead.[/citation]

ahmen to that dude , peopel are freaking stupid if they think any physical format will win agaisnt the almighty "digital" version, movies have jsut now startred to hit teh digital media format , but i beleive it will quickly surpass sales of physical media. one only needs to look at how teh music industry went to seewhat i'm talking about. Blu-ray in my opinion is to the movie industry , waht DVD audio disc was tot eh myusic industry ... that being a last leg for physcial retail before the storm of movie internet services really open up. consoles like Xbx 360 and services like net flix are just the start. not the end all's of the digital movie era.

[citation][nom]Belardo[/nom]Sony DOES allow MS to put Blu-ray into the 360.MS refuses to allow BR drive support, even from 3rd party...Which kind of KILLS the 360's media-hub abilities. There isn't a version of DL Avatar that compares to the BR disc version.Oh yeah, the new 360-slim is even uglier than the original 360. Now they should have made the joystick glossy too... to make it match the rest[/citation]

your argument is invalid you are stating opinionated premises with no supporting facts ,

1. i can down load a high def version of avatar off my xbx 360 it is at the same 1080p resolution as the blu ray disc , and it uses the same 5.1 surround as the blu-ray disc does so tell me in your argument where do you get that no DL version of avatar is the same as blu-ray because really i don't see how the two are differnt they have the same resolution, are you hoenstly trying to bullsh-t me into thinking that dl'ed 1080p looks different some how from 1080p on a disc ???

2. what the hell does a system's looks have to do with rather or not it is a capable media center ??? granted looks are nice , but serious do you care if your taoster looks "cool" or do you care rather or not it can taost your taost when you want toast ?

3. the only true premsies you cite , is the fact that MS refused to allow a Br player to be made for their maechine .. but even this premise alone hardly suports your implied conclusion that the 360 is an inadequate media hub.

a media hub by definiton is a peice of entertainment equipment that acts a center for dispersing entertainment .. the 360 connects to the internet , you can watch movies on it in both standard definiton and 1080p definition , you can play games on the 360 as well, and you can even run it to an nice surround set up and use it as a Surround audio system .. for a living room by all defnitions it performs extremely well as a medi hub/center. it does , this despite not having a blu ray player , it does this despite being ugly in some people's opinons. and it does this despite using downlaoded movies over disc.

Now that i'm done using what i learned in my logic clase , to compeltely anahilate your pathetic attempt to bullsh-t back up your argument, I think i will go watch a movie on my 360. Or play a game on my pc , which also serves adequately as an entertainment center despite not having a blu ray player.

demonhorde:

you forget that outside of the USA, we are stuck with incredibly restrictive download caps.
Here in NZ, i must pay a buttload for a 40gb a month download limit. thats not even the capacity of a single blu-ray disc. so for the foreseeable future, many of us must rely on physical media for HD content.

[citation][nom]nvmisfit[/nom]We are not going to see Blu-Ray in a Xbox for two reasons.Apple and Sony, two major competitors to Microsoft are members of the Blu-ray Disc Association.Bit of a conflict of interest there.[/citation]
So, that would be why apple STILL hasn't done anything at all regarding bluray eh?? Idiot!

I like how the article didn't mention about the huge giant power adapter. Maybe if they did shrink it, they still didn't manage to put it inside the console like the PS3.

[citation][nom]ulysses35[/nom]Hmm smaller console, does that mean smaller HSF too ?? not that the existing HSF in the standard xbox can cope with heat problems. RROD is still a sizeable problme for MS[/citation]
My brother's 360 died from a RROD last month after a couple years of light to normal use. It's a POS. I'm sure making it slimmer doesn't help matters.

A final act of desperation by Microsoft. In fact it looks like the XBOX is slowly morphing into a PS3 - shiny black case, even used the word 'slim' in the name, im guessing the next iteration will probably have Blu-Ray support.

After seeing the video of Kinetix or whatever it's called in action it's even more reason to lol, they look like a bunch of psychotic orangutans.

Have seen an unboxing vid, and the power adapter is still external. but much smaller than the original (since it now consumes much less power).

Maxor and others, do some research. the CPU and GPU have had a die shrink and been consolidated onto a single chip. in computing, making it smaller DOES make it cooler. even if it didn't, the overheating issue was solved more than a year ago. this one is even cooler and quieter than the current xboxes.

Are you suggesting that Microsoft need tips from Sony on how to sell a games console? o_O

I do hope not.

I read on Game stop's site that the slim is Kinect ready? What does that mean for regular 360 owners? Are regular 360's not Kinect ready?

People need to lay off on the RROD issue. It hasn't been a major problem since the first revision of the motherboard (Xenon), and that was replaced in 2007 by Zephyr. Ya, I know, bad first impressions, but if you're going to criticize it, criticize it for actual relevant failures. Like (at this point) lack of a bluray drive, and expensive proprietary accessories. Speaking of movies, the Slim has nothing to do with HD-DVD. Why are people associating the two? The XBox 360 uses a built-in DVD-9 drive, and the HD-DVD player was an external accessory.

I'm sorry to inform you that your sarcasm detector is broken. I was trying to colorfully explain that I would very much like to own this new Xbox. However, since I already own a 360, I do not wish to invest 299$ for a console I already have. On the other hand, if I could trade the one I have now , or sell it for the price of the new one, that would be a most awesome deal. Unfortunately, we both know that is impossible, right? Thus, the humorous fake sale ad.

But will it suffer from the RROD ? An improved design could mean smaller components and less heat, but a smaller chassis generally means less ventilation.

I believe the 360 only does 5.1 audio, so yes, there is no DL version of Avatar that you can play on the 360 that is as good as the original Bluray.

And give up on the conspiracy theories, no-one other than Microsoft is preventing a Bluray player going into the 360.

In terms of making a lot of money, they make it hand over fist on Blu-Ray already. They sold 3.4 million copies of Avatar the first day it came out, on Blu-Ray, just counting U.S. and Canada.

Whether physical media loses sales long term is debatable, but I think it's likely, but looking at it from the context of whether Sony made the right decision by backing Blu-Ray on their PS3, it's clear they did. They already have made a lot of money on it, and sales just keep adding to it. It's still a much bigger market than kiddies that play video games at home.

But, unless they lower the prices of these movies on Blu-Ray, I'm in complete agreement they're going to lose a lot. $30 a movie is just not going to inspire people to make purchases unless it's a movie they really, really want. Impulse purchases are poorly served by the $30 cost of Blu-Ray discs.
