A tech guy who has opened one up says that the only audio tweak that may
have been implemented vs. the CLD-97 is the use of multi-bit DACs. I was
wondering if anyone with the appropriate knowledge could verify whether or
not that was actually done with the MLD-7020.

I am going to make the CLD-97 vs. MLD-7020 choice very soon.

I've worked on both units. They had the same DAC in them. With the
7020 use get the McIntosh look but you loose the Quick Turn (Theatre
More) button on the front. I have rewired the Random play button on the
frontto bethe Theatre Mode before.

Same units internally, buy the cosmetics you prefer.

McIntosh charged an extra $1100 for the cosmetics (I've found the old
retail price). That's why I asked. Those genuine "audiophile" brands
are obviously very full of themselves.

If I had an MLD-7020 could I sent it to you or your shop and have the
Random Play button rewired?

Someone was selling an already modified CLD-97 on ebay and pulled
the auction.
