My son is looking into getting a top-of-the-line laptop for gaming. His budget is $7000 (I realize for that amount he could build a kick-ass desktop but he really wants a laptop. I also realize that Alienware gets a bad rep around here but he is kind of set on it). He put together an Alienware build that came in just under that number but just told me that he heard there was a compatability issue with the Samsung SSD and the dual GPUs he picked and that he would have to either go single GPU with the ssd and Intel cpu or skip the SSD and get an HDD with dual GPUs and AMD cpu or something like that...said he read it on the Alienware forums. My real questions are, 1.) What other gaming laptops would compete at that price point? and 2.) Does anyone have any info on that compatability issue? Thanks for any help.

Unless its posted as a compatibility issue on the configuration menu from alienware i'd say its just some forum tech junkies talking like they know it.

honestly if i had to pick a custom gaming laptop:

digital storm would be the first place id' go then if it wasn't them then its:
http://build.falcon-nw.com/

Let me know if youd like help spec's wise configuring. Alienware is nice but its not the only kid on the block. If i was going to buy a Gaming laptop my self i'd go ROG but the highest GPU i seen them come with was a GTX 675M.. So youd want a custom laptop if you want two 680's in SLI and 2 SSD's

Please please please do NOT buy an alienware. They're extremely, extremely bad.

Look at Falcon NW or Origin.

Also tell him that he can spend $2k to get a "decent" gaming laptop and $1.2k to get a desktop that would be MORE powerful than his $7k laptop. That way he has the laptop he wants AND something that's actually good, for way less money.

I don't know too much about laptops or computers in general but did mention that Alienware does seem to get a lot of bad press. He said he was aware of this but said that for the build he put together, no other laptop could beat its benchmarks. I am not buying this for him so its ultimately his decision.

I know the build he put together has dual 680s and he really just wants the best gaming specs possible. I will let him know that I started this thread and hopefully he will chime in. Thanks for the help.

7000 holy crap thats mad budget. you could build The fastest gaming pc available. however if your son wants alienware thats fine. Alienware is just alot of money. but if you can afford it. its fine

Just get a 680m sli

and get the mx18

He got the Alienware MX18 with dual 680s and SSDs. Like I said, this was a gift and not from me so he is happy and thats all that matters to me.
