Hello,

I just received my new Moto g play (2024). My previous phone is the Moto e6, but I'm running out of internal storage on the Moto e6

So far, it looks like the Moto g play does not allow formatting an sd card as internal storage, but as portable only. AND it seems, it doesn't allow for apps to be installed on the SD card. I am able to do this on the Moto e6, but I'm not given the option on the Moto g play.

Am I doing something wrong? Am I missing a step? Maybe it's something new, whereby you aren't allowed to install apps on external SD cards now.

When I choose Settings > Storage> (choose SD card from pulldown menu) > press the three vertical dots and choose Format...... The only option is what is shown below in picture:

So far I'm seeing the same thing and have also been unsuccessful using alternative options. I figure the internal storage format option might not be possible if the device itself is skipping the particular format option. Moto G Play 2024 is one the best budget phones available...this may be one of the setbacks to the model. I hope I'm wrong but that's where I'm at too now.

Thanks for the reply. I received an answer on another message board about this.

"Unfortunately, starting from Android 10, the ability to format an SD card as internal storage has been removed, and the Moto G Play only supports SD cards as portable storage. This means you can use the card for files like music and videos, but not for installing apps."

So that's what I did, I installed the micro SD card which will allow storage of all the pictures / videos directly on it. I guess it's great if you have a massive music library, or huge portfolio of pictures and videos, but for me it's not really needed, as I don't save too many on my phone.
So far, the 64 gb of storage capacity seems like it should be good for me.
