I'm a Luddite wanting to connect multiple audio inputs (spotify/pandora, mp3 player, cd player, radio etc) to 4 different pairs of speakers in such a way that each pair can be controlled (on/off and volume) separately. I dont need HUGE volume from any one speaker pair (they aren't super powerful anyway) but there are times when all 4 pairs will need to be at a respectable volume simultaneously. The speakers, adequate speaker cables, and input devices are already paid for, so I'm guessing what's needed is a way to route inputs to different speaker pairs, and a way to adequately power those speakers even when all 4 pairs are in use. Is this feasible without expensive and complex hardware? A (much) lower priority would be to route different signals to different speakers simultaneously.

Solution
Since you want to route different sources to different rooms you would need something like this
http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dax66-6-source-6-room-distributed-whole-house-audio-system-with-keypads-25-wpc--300-585
at a minimum to power each pair and route sources.
If you budget allows I would highly suggest using Sonos. Four Sono ConnectAmps would power the speakers and their free control app will allow you to great functionality with every smartphone, tablet and computer as a remote.
If you go the other route then you can add a Sonos Connect as a source and get additional ones later.
