Try monitoring the temps and see if it shuts down when it reaches a certain temperature. If that is the case, you would have to try cleaning out the device and see if that helps.

NOTE: If the device is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer rather than opening it up yourself.

how do I monitor the temperatures. it could go days without shutting down and then it might do it 2 or 3x in one day.

You would need to install a monitoring program. There are a lot of free ones out there that you can download. I can't say one is better to use than another, but personally I like Speedfan.
