My HP DV7 laptop screen is broke. How do I connect an external moniitor if it dosen't automaticly detect the external monitor

NEED HELP CONNECTING EXTERNAL MONITOR TO MY HP DV7.

Hi
Conect the monitor prior power on the laptop.
If does not power up the monito automaticaly pres Fn+F4 few times - wayt for 4-5 sec. before next press.
