My laptop screen will not illuminate

My laptop screen will not turn on. I tried looking under bright light and holding a flashlight up to it to see if it's very dim but it's not on at all. The lights do illuminate when the ac adapter is plugged in and also once I turn it on. I can hear the hard drive starting up. Could this issue be the whole laptop screen, the inverter, or the back light that needs replacing? Please help

Probably the whole screen. Does the laptop have a VGA-out port? If so, you could hook it up to a monitor and see if you get a picture. If you do and entire screen is dead, it will need replacing. Not cheap!

if you cant see anything even under bright lights or a flashlight, your LCD is dead. As someone said, if you plug it into an external monitor from a vga or hdmi port and you get a display, your gpu is fine and its a screen issue.
