My laptop will not start up

My Acer Aspire laptop (AS5742-6878) won't start up. When I press the power botton, the power indicator light blinks 5 times.....and then, nothing. Incidentally, the battery indicator does not light up at all. I have the unit hooked up to an external power source but the computer just wo't start up. Is it possible that a disunctional battery would preclude the computer from starting up even though it is connected to an external power source.

I would call Acer and ask them to walk you thru the troubleshooting procedure. I'd ask my son (He worked for Acer TS) but he's sleeping
