My lenovo 510 bios won't recognize my reformatted (Linux ext 4) Transcend 1T external

The Transcend manual is vague. My problem is that I get a login loop with 14.04 after I installed 16.04. I can login w/ terminal to 14.04 and see my stuff and i thought that I could do a clean install on the ex and move my home directory from my hd to the ex. Wishful thinking? Also, I can see my 14.04 in 16.04 files.
