I am at work and I can't wait to get this thing home.

I don't have a subscription to the tv schedules so do I need to connect it to a
phone line? My intentions are to setup a DVArchive server. What do I need to
get the replay initialized? Thanx.

Once you open the box and read the instructions it should all be
apparent. You'll need to connect via ethernet or phone line to activate
your subscription. If you don't activate the unit it will be worthless.

Since I don't have a subscription out of the box, will I get a free trial
period?

You will get a 10 day free trial. After that, either subscribe or use it as
a boat anchor.

after about 7-8 days, the schedule will quit working though (it has
quit before the 10 days on the last 3 that I bought.. really ticked me off!)

Is the replay still accessible after the schedules quit? Would I still have
access to my movies I copied?

Then, the unit must have been lying about how long the trial
activation lasts.

I have a monthly machine and I have seen "doorstop" a few times. The play list
is still there but there is no sound when you play them. The guide is blank and
you get a nag screen with virtually every key press. There was something else
wrong but I don't remember what it was.

It's a doorstop. Please understand that the fee is not for a
subscription to the TV listings. The fee is part of the unit's cost and
is a license subscription. The listings are just one of the features
that are turned on when the fee is paid. This should have been made
clear to you when you bought it.
