Need for external speaker for car nav? iPaq 3650

I have recently purchased iGuidance 2.0 software (similar to Routis & some
others) and have tried it in the car with my laptop. Plan is to use it with
my iPaq 3650.

On the laptop, volume was about right but I needed laptop vol control at
max. I don't have the expansion sleeve for my iPaq yet, so could not try
it. But, I am a bit concerned that I won't be able to hear it.

I have not bought a mount yet, but the ones with built in speaker that I
have seen, don't seem to be for the iPaq 3600 series. They are also a bit
expensive.

Question:
- Have owners been able to use the iPaq without an external speaker for car
navigation?
- If not, what would be an economical solution?

Most electronics stores will have a headset (mini) to cassette adapater.
Basically you plug the plug into the ipag and insert the cassette in
your car's cassette player (assuming there is a cassette player). The
adapater should also work for playing the audio from your laptop through
the car as well.

Run a standard cable with a male 3.5mm plug on each end from the IPaq
headphones-out to the car radio's aux-in.

i have activesync 3.7.1 and when i use usb plug to syn activesync starts to
dial out.
i only have usb check in connection setting.

how can i stop activesync from dialing out when snycing?

i have no e-mail accounts set up.

If I could do that, what would happen if I was playing the radio?

I have several cars that I might use this in:
- One has an older Blaupunkt with no aux-in - could use a tape adapter
- Other two have radios that may have an aux-in on the back, but would have
to dismantle to find out. they too have tape players that could be used.

If I connected via tape adapter, then, I guess I have no radio?

You are correct that using the aux input would prevent the use of the
radio for listening or playing other media.

There are amplified speakers available to meet this need... Rat Shack
has them along with other vendors... Rat Shack prices start at around
$25, others seem to start at around $80

There is also a device available at Radio Shack for around $20 that will
boost the output from a ppc audio jack so that it will drive small
unpowered speakers sufficiently to hear them in a car environment.

Well - I think I came up with one!

I loaded the program onto my iPaq and found that the turn by turn
instructions are just .wav files. I tapped on a few and adjusted the volume
up a bit. Not exactly HiFi sound quality, but I think that it's clear and
loud enough to hear over the road noise.

May add a speaker later if this does not work out. For now, the only wire
will be the power cord

I would assume that the radio would recognize the presence of an object in
its line-in jack, whereupon the radio would turn off both the tuner and
the tape or CD, and play the sounds coming from your PocketPC instead. At
least that's how it worked way back in the day when I ran a discman into
the front line-in jack of my FM/cassette radio. Other radios have buttons
to select the source (FM/AM/CD/AUX).

That would be too snake-nesty for my taste

I'm sorry, I meant _front_ line-in jack.

I have an iPAQ 3870 and use the Navman GPS sleeve (and their SmartST
software) with it.

Using the suction mount on the windscreen in the middle of the car I
have no problems using only the iPAQ built-in speaker in either (1)
our family wagon with kids being generally noisy in the back, or (2)
our convertible sportscar with the roof down at up to 70mph (110km/h).
NB: The software I am using has the choice between a female and male
voice, and I find the female one cuts through the road and car noise
rather better.

This will solve your problems

you also play music from your PDA at the same time this gives you the
best of both worlds. Guidance & Entertainment. I use Audia X ver 1 and
also use it to stream music round the house from my PC etc etc
