Hi.
I already own a fairy decent desktop. I need a laptop to do my Autocad and some 3ds max projects at campus. My budget is really tight and below $500. what laptop would you suggest that runs smoothly and would handle Autocad and 3ds max easily. Also I really care bout the build quality.
(No Dell laptops if possible).

Below $500 will generally get you low-end/entry level laptops, the kind you see at WalMart with Intel Pentiums, Intel Atoms, or AMD E series or A series processors. Autocad usually requires dedicated graphics and a mid to high end CPU; Intel i5 or i7 with a decent NVidia chip or high end AMD graphics, which will run closer to $1,000 and up.

I think you'll have a very difficult time finding something that works for you with a budget like that, even if you shop refurbs/used.

I would save up as 3ds max is very gpu intensive. I use it for my uni course and I have an asus n series laptop which cost £800. This is really the minimum that I would say if you want to use it without the program lagging.

But if you insist on getting a laptop for this low price, have a look at this website: http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/laptops/
I really would advice you to get a 17inch laptop as this will make your life easier as a 3d modeller.

Wow, that laptop must have had a good gpu as 3ds max is a beast of a thing when it comes to ram and gpu.

The models that you have made must have been very simple as the gpu is not very strong. And it must have not had a lot of textures that were high res.
