So im looking at building my first speaker system, a 2.1 surround for my pc. I have been looking at parts but im a little confused. I have a speaker amplifier board for my speakers which has dc12 power, 3.5mm input, and connections for 2 100w drivers.
I am guessing the best way to connect a 2.1 system is by having the amp and power in the subwoofer, with rca connections on the back, then running rca to 3.5mm to my pc. Then on the speakers, juat wire them to rca connections on the back, without an amp as they would be powered and amplified within the subwoofer?
Does this sound correct at all?
And if it is, what sort of subwoofer amplifier board would i need?

Thanks guys

P.s as i said im completely new to this, and have no idea what im talking about, so i may be completely wrong, i was just guessing about how it would be wired up haha

Solution
Start by googling "how to build a 2.1 speaker system".

Then narrow down the resulting links to focus more on your specific requirements.

E.g., here is a link from within this forum:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2924320/building-speaker-system.html

Or this link:

http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-1735341/put-speaker-system-computer-connect.html

See if you can work out a plan that seems viable to you and post that plan for comment. You will learn more and there are some very good people here who will be able to provide specific comments and suggestions.

If you build a 2.1 channel system you need three channels of amplification. There are plate amps that are designed to do what you want. It is preferable to have a high pass crossover for the satellites not just a low pass for the sub.
Check out www.parts-express.com
They support the speaker building community. Their forum might be helpful too.

With that amp I would build a set of 2.0 monitors. You are using a car audio amplifier arn't you, and trying to make computer speakers from it?

It would work, but the 12V power supply will make the cost too high. And you have no preamp for processing or volume control.

Secondly you need cooling or some sort of heatsink. Most computer speakers or sub amplifiers have a plate amplifier at the back with the heatsink exposed for cooling. You can't bury a car amp inside a speaker.

The best solution would be to leave that car amplifier external, with a 12V power supply external. Then just hook up to a pair of speakers. Later on upgrade to a small stereo amplifier. Or sell it and start from scratch.

If you are looking to build a set of speakers as a hobby, start from scratch and pick up a kit as your first project. Parts Express is a good place to start with a Dayton Audio kit. If you are trying to save money, stop while you are ahead and just buy some speakers. People don't go homemade to save money, they do it for the audiophile quality, and audiophile isn't cheap.
