Hey guys,
My girlfriend has asked me for advice on getting a new laptop, and since im strictly desktop and know nothing about laptops, I thought id consult you guys on this. Basically she's got a pretty high end desktop that I built for her which she uses for work with 3D software such as Maya, 3ds Max, Zbrush and game engines such as Unity and Unreal for her university course. She also does some gaming(team fortress 2, l4d2, nothing fancy. Tomb raider is probably the most demanding thing she plays). The main point of this laptop is to let her do work when she's traveling. She spends a lot of time at her parents house in norway, and is often on long train and airplane rides, so having a laptop to supplement her desktop would be useful. And while I can probably find a laptop that does all this, im not at all familiar with mobility graphics cards and CPU chipsets, and I dont feel like id be able to determine good value for money with a laptop since ive never owned or bought one myself. So here goes:
1. What is your budget?
~£500
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
13 inch screen
3. What screen resolution do you want?
1366 x 768 maybe? Not sure, the more the better but its negotiable.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Portable.
5. How much battery life do you need?
The more the better I guess. Since its intended for travel, then battery life will probably be more important than for a laptop that just sits on a desk all day.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? Yes, but nothing overly fancy. Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, etc.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.) To be able to work with 3D software such as Maya, 3ds Max, Zbrush and game engines such as Unity and Unreal.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
500gb
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links. www.scan.co.uk are a personal favorite, because they are locally based so I can just pick things up, but im not overly fussed where it comes from.
10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
2 years minimum
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? Just a basic dvd drive.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
13. What country do you live in?
UK/Norway
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
Just to reiterate, this will be a primarily 3D modeling work laptop used to supplement an existing desktop, rather than to replace it.
Any questions do let me know. I really appreciate the help guys.
