I currently have an HP dv5. Core Duo p7350 / 4gb / geforce 9200m / 1680 rez / 15"

It is used for streaming movies and MLB.tv and NFL. Also used for downloading shows and watching them.

I either watch on the screen or connect via HDMI to a 55' LED

CUrrently have an issue where the laptop LCD will flash black and white horizontal lines while not affecting the output to the TV at all. This means it's either the lcd screen or a cable inside which is a common problem with these laptops over the years.

If it's going to cost me 100+ to get it opened and fixed, I would rather just get something newer and faster. Is there a decent laptop out there that would give me a lot more power in the $400 range? (need hdmi output / graphics to handle movies/ BACKLIT KEYBOARD!!! )

Thanks for any advice

Take a look at this for $399- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834312518

Lenovo G580
Windows 8
Intel Core i3-3110M (2.4GHz)
15.6” HD (1366x768) VibrantView LED Display
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB hard drive
Intel HD 4000 graphics (4x more powerful than NVIDIA 9200M)
DVD-RW
Ports-
1-VGA
1-HDMI
2-USB 3.0
1-USB 2.0
Webcam, Separate Numeric Keypad, Media Card Reader
1-year Warranty
Dark Brown Metallic Finish

I bought a G580 for my sister last year and it has worked flawlessly. A great deal for the price (I only paid $349, but had a slower processor)

You won’t find a backlit keyboard for under $500, sorry. But this will easily outperform your current system and meet your needs with HDMI and the Intel HD 4000 has plenty of muscle for your needs!
