My first post here friends, I am in a bit of an urgent need. I hope to be give back to the community in time.

Link to the Laptop

The videos will be 30 mins minimum. There will be some colour corrections and subtitling but not heavy duty effects. The max video quality will be that from a canon 5d camera.
If this does not serve the purpose then I only need a system to write, so I will not spend the money. Also, I am okay with Ubuntu (linux).
I have looked elsewhere on the internet but get a little lost in the technicalities. I thank you for the time.

(I need to know that I can do colour correction and transitions comfortably? I hope that doesn't come under 'heavy effects'. Can the two cores (4 threads) handle this much? I don't have to submit projects to anyone, no deadlines, so I am okay if rendering takes some time.)

There are several things that video editors strive for:

1. Threads, and more threads. The better software packages benefit from more threads all the way up to the 5960x

2. CUDA, again the better software packages benefit greatly from CUDA. AMD users can use Open CL, but CUDA does better.

4. More RAM is better, faster RAM is better, lower CAS is better....16 GB minimum

look here at the relative value provided by each CPU

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i5-4210M+%40+2.60GHz

All that being said, there is no sense going all out on the hardware if your software will not. So what software package you use will determine your hardware requirements

Thank you for your response. I plan to use kdenlive, which is somewhat like Premiere, Sony Vegas pro. Will the laptop whose link I have mentioned be able to fulfill my needs that I have mentioned in the post? The challenge is that it's a 2 core 4th gen i5.
Kindly let me know.

The link is fixed. Will be glad to see your response to the query I have written.

I don't think we can say that kdenlive is like adobe premiere... AP minimum system requirements is 8 GB, 32 times that of kdenlive. My experience with putting together video editing builds is mainly this... the "minimum system requirements" are woefully inadequate in the minds of folks who actually do this. The recommended system requirements ? ,,, yeah that too.

I'd suggets hanging out in Linux oriented video editing forum to get direct feedback from folks who are using it.

Thanks for the response.
May I ask?
I cannot exceed the current budget. In the same budget there is an AMD a10 processor [LINKhttp://]

What would the best option be for me if my aim is the same, as I mentioned in the original post?
The A10 has 4 cores. I5 has 2. I5 has multi-threading and perhaps a10 doesn't. :|

I am much quicker with making decisions on fields. Can you pls guide me for machines?

With i5- 4210m i thing you can even edit 4k
Yew, the answer is yes

I gotta say that I can't be of much help ... I would wanna use google and find a few sites where folks posted this or that as I have no knowledge as to the authors knowledge or experience. I have built boxes before for video editing users and they have all been Windows, usually Adobe, Intel X99 platform with $500 - $100 CPUs, 32 GB of RAM more often than not and fast storage systems.

With lack of knowledge in the Linux, kdenlive AMD arena arena, I am just afraid to steer you down the wrong path. Looking at a few sites, I didn't even find anyone including AMD in the testing:

Here's some sites you might peruse

Thank you JackNaylorPE,

I understand the limitations.
I have left aside the AMD option after going through the links.
I understand you build the boxes; in case you know a bit from experience, do tell -- if I'll be able to edit 30 min HD videos, with colour correction and transition on the I5 4210m system I have ordered.
Thanks for the knowledge thus far and regards.

When folks ask me to build something, I treat them like my wife. I will offer my advice, and if they insist on doing something for which I don't feel comfy (i.e. CLCs), I bow out and let them do it :). Our primary forte is building Gaming and Workstation boxes for CAD.... which is basically 'the same thing". What is great for gaming, is great for 2D / 3D CAD.

When peeps want rendering or video editing boxes, I start with X99 or Z170 .... 32 GB and SSDs / SSHds and they tell me where to go up from there ... again, almost like the wife, but these folks tell me to go up, she tell me to go to [points down] ... :)

So I have to say, I can't really help you cause once it's built and OC'd. it leaves ... I don't get to play with it after that. That's why I pointed to those links figuring they would help you more than I did.
