I have a friend whose Internet Explorer home page is getting hijacked; neither Ad-Aware nor Spybot have been able to fix it, and his Norton Anti-virus doesn't find it either. The new home page resets to "drxcount." something. Has anyone heard of this, and knows how to get rid of it?
Thanks...

it is probably a certian site he visits that is able to change his homepage. this has happened to me before. spywareblaster may be able to remedy this...

i have never had a crash due to this problem. in fact, i usually just reset my homepage back to where i had it, then avoid the site in the future. (Note: i now use Mozilla Firefox and this problem has not occured to me again yet).

but this problem is odd, isnt it? now, i am a new student of HTML, and i am certain that no form of markup would be able to change a site user's homepage. like you, jihiggs, i am sure that i never gave permission for any executable to run on my machine. any clue as to what it could be that causes the annoying "homepage change-a-roo"?

There are some free programs providing registry optimizations and those things and some of them changes the homepage and even if you reset the homepage it will go back to the unwanted website.
The solution can be uninstalling such software if you have installed.
Another thing is that there are ActiveX and VB softwares installed from your browser when you were surfing some idiotic sites. Most of them get to you with popup windows.
And it will force you to click "Yes" granting them the permission to install their software.
Once you click "yes", you are giving them everything you can possibly give and you remain bare naked.
They can install something to your pc and hide somewhere that is difficult to find.
Yes, most of them are hidden in the registry and some of them will automatically load stealthly during your windows bootup. This can be avoided by increasing your security level from your browser opton to prevent those unwanted program from running from your browser.
I suggest is that you search those programs.
Some can be found at your \ProgramFiles\??? and you might find that it has an uninstaller.
Or, you might find it in the add/remove software in your control panel.
you might want to run msconfig and see in the startup list and if you find some suspicious programs, delete them.
And finally, run the registry cleanup software and remove related registries.
Reboot and see if it works.
If it doesn't work, the final solution will be a clean install of your windows. - Don't reinstall over your old windows!!!
If you have only 1 partition and don't want to format your windows, then you can
1. rename the win.com file to win.xxx
2. rename the Windows folder to win.xxx
3. rename the Program Files folder to prog.xxx
4. reboot and install from CD.

If this is not helpful, you can give me that PC for free.

Yours is mine... and mine is mine....

well your exactly right...im not saying it sucks cause i go to porn websites or anything. I only go to newegg, and computer based websites, such as forum and tech review sites. Porn sites are rediculous, #1 you don't see anything i learned my lesson on that crap when i was like 14 ... no site gives you anything really just those quick tours with just some louring photos to get you to pay for there site. If you guys want porn just download Real Movies and crap. But IE is not only FULL of Security Wholes and those damn annoying ass updates every damn week. Plus for some reason i always got way more popups using IE then Opera or Mozilla.

i am in total agreement with the fact that IE sucks. im sure some of you have stopped by my thread in this forum singing the praises of mozilla firefox. in fact, the only reason i keep IE around is to test HTML i write up, and to login to the UO's email server. i guess the server only likes IE :(
