Hi there, having a little problem with a relatives new laptop. She just bought a Toshiba Satellite C850-1KN running Windows 8.
The first day was fine; did setup and installed basic programs.
However the next day it ended up in a repair loop saying "Toshiba is searching for a solution..etc" and then restarting.
And now when we turn on the computer it comes up with a black screen saying "Check media" followed by "fail" after a few seconds. And then it says "No bootable devices"
I don't really know how to proceed. My thinking is that it can't recognise the HDD. I can get into the BIOS but that's about it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks kindly

Changing the boot mode to CSM works!!!!! :bounce:

On Boot....press F2 to access BIOS and disable secure boot then on advanced>system configuration enable CMS boot!!

You can now boot from CDs and USB as well as HDD!!!

If that is a new laptop with warranty just go to store and make them solve it! It may have a faulty hard disk!

If not:
As said in Samuel Mbindyo's comment. When you disable "secure boot" the option to change boot type will be available, change from UEFI to CMS mode. Then press F10 to exit saving changes.

If this don´t solve the problem and hard disk is still not available there must be a problem. It can be corrupted windows startup, damaged hard disk or connetion between disk and motherboard.

hello i have same problem but in advanced boot mode is UEFI boot and i can't arrive to change this it's in grey colour i don't understand.

Hello,

I have the same issue with a new Toschiba laptop. No booting up. In BIOS I disabled the secured boot option, however I could not find the CMS/UEFI change option in BIOS not present at all (Not in advanced, not in any other tabs).. 🙁 Any idea? Thank you in advance. Rob

That's strange, if it's the latest toshibas. Wich model do you have? I have a L50-B with an intel i3 processor. I don´t remember exactly the tab. Made this operation for a clean windows 8.1 instalation, that was working fine (just didn´t want all that included software).

I Need answer
I changed the boot mode in bios and now it is saying i need to insert boot disk and check cable connection ... What is a boot disk and what is the cable connection?

So you have "secure boot" disable and boot mode in CMS but still there is no bootable device working. Check the detected devices and if the hard disk is listed.
- A boot disk is a CD/DVD/USB with bootable software (with a windows instalation disk, for example)
- Cable conetion is the interface between your computer and your drives (hard disk, DVD player) that is not working, so the system isn´t recognizing the phisical drive. The hard disk or the plug/cable may be damaged or with a bad connetion (if this doesn´t changes you have to check it physically, by opening the laptop). If the conetions are right you may have to replace the hard disk.
First step is to check for detect hard disk in BIOS. If there isn´t one and you have one conneted. Only after you get a detect hard drive you can pass to a boot. If that hard drive already have a working operating system (windows or other compatible) you only have to select it in the boot order list and it will run on startup.
If you have a hard disk working but it won´t start is because there is no operating system or it's corrupted. So you have to get a bootable device and try to install a windows (or other). You can get the windows ISO file and make it bootable with Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (works with windows 8 and 8.1 also). The options are to burn in DVD or USB pen drive as explained here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
More then this only with your laptop in hand... Sorry.

first you have to Disable "secure boot" the option to change boot type will be available, change from UEFI to CMS mode.

Im having the exact issue..i cant find any help online.

Toshiba C55A wont boot from another drive. Tried external cd in order to boot and internal with not success.... Tried to change the bios configuration but dont let me! its like disable just appear UEFI. I download some bios upgrade etc and try to install via USB drive but the laptop still reading media fail. Its like it dont see any usb drive, neither cd drivers...its extremly important to me fix that ASAP and i smacked my head days and long nights with no success... (the laptop previously had win 8) it dont have warranty.

Thanks to all on this page!I was able to use Trinity Rescue Kit to rescue my dads forgotten password laptop! A few of the suggestions is what it took. This replied to one and boot sequence.

Oh and change it back when you're done!!!!! As someone on here stated as well!

Again THANKS MUCH!

Hi guys I'm having this exact same issue however my issue actually only started AFTER I disabled secure boot and changed to CSM, I now just get a blank greyish screen on start up, can't access the bios and when I rarely manage to get to the boot menu selecting the HDD doesn't work and it didn't work when I tried a recovery USB or cd either.

It always comes up with media failure and insert boot disk so it just looks like it's completely not recognising the HDD. It's a windows 8.1 but I don't have a re installation disk for that OS and only have a system image back up so bit worried if I can't get it back.

It's a toshiba satellite c850d does anyone have any ideas or know how to access the bios? Can't get f2 f12 or esc f1 to work?

This totally worked for me. After I followed the below instructions I was able to install an OS via internal CD ROM drive. I did not need an external drive.

Thanks!

SOLVED!!!!! I had same issue. I took the middle panel off the back and found drive had slid to the side and became disconnected. Slid it back and its fixed. Toshiba should have splurged on a couple more screws to hold it in place.

Try hitting F12 instead. This should bring up the boot menu, and at the bottom offer you the option to "Enter setup" which will take you to the BIOS if selected.
