Newb question

I am trying to hook up surround sound via my audio video controller. I have everything working properly, but when I go into playback devices and select my hdmi out, it only hass the option for stereo when i select speaker configuration. Is there any way to fix this?

I'm doing some reading and I'm finding the HDMI out from an nvidia card does not support surround sound.
