[citation][nom]invlem[/nom]... when has cell actually benefited Sony, other than marketing hype and folding the cell processor has been more of a hindrance than a benefit to the PS3. Had they jammed a simpler quad core into the system at the time I guarantee you it wouldn't have taken developers this many years to figure out how to make a decent performing game on the system and the system would have a bigger market footprint than it does today.Keep it simple and maybe the devs will embrace the new device...[/citation]Exactly. They would be better off with a moderate CPU and an amazing GPU. Offloading floating point operations to the Cell SPEs generally does not make a lot of sense - these modern GPUs are just so much better at it. A dual core Snapdragon might make more sense. They just want to continue to build Cell processors because its their chip. Not because they're technically superior.

[citation][nom]Ciuy[/nom]thats more powerfull then my curent 2 core PC[/citation]
Depends on what you are doing with it.

[citation][nom]aethm[/nom]OK, first of all, is the cell processor so inefficient that it can't keep up with an Intel Quad, or even a dual core? As a PC gamer, you don't need more than that for ANY GAME. Second, The GPU is going to be the deciding factor here, why even speculate until we get some info on it?[/citation]
Remember that the PS3 Cell CPU only has 1 general-purpose core. The SPEs are good for SIMD operations, but not nearly as good for general-purpose as x64 chips and PPEs. In the PS3, the SPEs being used for graphic boosting

[citation][nom]eddieroolz[/nom]A quad-core Cell processor, in a handheld!? This is exciting if it is indeed true![/citation]
They may mean 1 PPE and 3 SPEs.

If Its powerful enough to play PS2 Games, then it will have a very large Market of games available on launch, as im sure it won't be hard to port the Ps2 versions of games onto a PSP2 device if its made from the ground up to play them, given they are already starting to make PSX games available on the PSP (downloadable from the PSN network), it seems like the next logical step.

You mean like the 360 processor? Wait, isn't the Xenos processor basically the same as the Cell but with a few more instruction sets? Oh snap I think your argument just went the way of a flushed turd son.

If Sony does do what the article suggests. Heat is going to be a MASSIVE problem, there's no way around that. Also Sony NEEDS to stop using openGL for their system. Apple uses it for a reason, to keep anything that is proprietary off their products for as long as possible. That's killing them in their market and they probably pretty damn well know it.

[citation][nom]elcentral[/nom]altho the looks are not to right the tuch and power ar dead on if you get a bigger screen whit almost 720p ita a 250% that ill get it[/citation]

Meh they could just go with Moorestown and it can do dual 1080P streams native to the CPU and probably be just as powerful for the games as well as offer more in terms of OS support and push the ability to run Linux, Unix and Windows.

If anything, a 4 core Cell should be powerful enough to push at leats one 1080P HD stream. Then again, Cell is only good at single tasking so maybe not.

[citation][nom]Ciuy[/nom]thats more powerfull then my curent 2 core PC[/citation]

Probably not. You forget that Cell is good for single tasking much like a GPU. That means that even with 4 "cores" (if you can call them real cores) it can only handle one process at a time. Albiet its very fast per process, it till might not be as powerful as your dual core that can do 2 tasks or more at the same time.

If it does pack Cell, it would be a pretty decent graphics upgrade. But Cell does use a lot of power so battery life will be hard to figure since I doubt it would be clocked very high due to heat as well.

I still say Moorestown will probably be a better choice. It already is able to do native HD 1080P, supports a wide array of softwar and as well hardware acceleration.

The 360s Xenon is much like Cell yes, but in truth it is basically hree modified PPEs like the Cells main PPE. So in terms of power, its pretty much equal.

As for the srticle, if it does have a 4 core CPU might I suggest Tomes Hardware check out the PowerPC A2? It will have 2 CPUs, one at 2.3GHz with 16 cores and 65w TDP and 4 cores at 1.4GHz at a 20w TDP.

IBM just revealed it at ISSCC this year and if anything that 1.4GHz one might fit the PSP2 CPUs profile.

I'm amazed people still haven't realised Cell is a good call on Sony's part. Their 1st party studios have laid the foundations for future development. The dev tools are getting stronger and most of the issues you see with it come from shoddy ports rather than Cell issues. Even then, the main issues are going to be around how they've created a game for a different memory architecture and started development the wrong way round.

There is a lot of FUD about cell and gaming around. Regardless, PSP didn't work out so great anyway. So who cares. Sony's marketing and PR never help themselves anyway.
