If I have one replayTV unit (5040) with service, is it possible to buy
another unit (5504) without any service and watch my old recorded
shows (from the 5040)

If I understand what you're asking, you want to buy a 5504 and watch the
shows that are on the 5040 without paying for a subscription on the
5504. If that is correct, the answer is "no", you need a subscription
to use the 5504 past the trial period.

If you only want to stream video to another unit, you may want to
consider using a pc with dvarchive, or modified xbox with xbox media center.

This has been asked and answered almost weekly. Without activation the
unit will not work. It becomes a doorstop or boat anchor after the trial
period. The term "activation" does not apply only to the TV listings
subscription but to the entire unit. If you don't activate it it is not
active - it is dead.
Good news! If you already have an active unit you can activate up to 5
additional units at the same address for only $6.95/unit/month.
