No sound from Sony sound bar when I put my dvd player on

I bought a Sony home theater sound bar with woofer. I connect my digital optical from the back of my cable box to the home theatre. But I switch over to use my dvd there is no sound from the sound bar. PLEASE HELP

I don't have the sound bar connect to the dvd player I have it connected through the tv. Works fine that way but did I need to get a splitters

So neither the dvd player nor the tv is connected to the soundbar. Only the cablebox is?

Yes. I connected the sound bar to the tv using the digital optical port. The sound comes out of the bar when the tv is playing. How do I set up the the sound bar so the the sound comes out when I'm playing dvd.. please help me.

Since you get TV thru the sound bar the input/output connections are correct for that. You need to connect the DVD player with the output port of the player to the input port of the sound bar. Then you have to switch on the Sound bar remote to the input port on the SB. It may be labeled HDMI1, HDMI3 or HDMI3 on the remote. No does you DVD have HDMI ports? If not you can get Blu Ray players cheap that will work.

The input button on the remote tells the bar what input port to use.
