No sound on laptop headphone jack when connected to TV via HDMI cable

Okay here's the setup. Laptop to LED tv via HDMI cable. Movie  to watch is in USB stick plugged to laptop. All okay and sound comes from the tv speakers. I wanted to hear the sound through stereo component speakers nearby so I  connected a headphone jack in laptop that connects to auxiliary jacks in the stereo but no sound transmitted. Works  if not connected to tv via hdmi cable. So how do I get what I wanted to happen? Thanks.

Assuming you're using the laptop's headset jack the reason it's not working is because your TV is now the audio output and has bypassed the jack on your laptop for the one on the TV.

You can edit sound settings to change this and swap audio output from the TV to the laptop temporarily.
