No Surround Sound

Hi there guys. First I like techs but somehow it hates me. Hope you guys can help. I have an LG TV and a JVC dvd/receiver (home theatre). My TV has just one option for audio out and that's through Optical Cable and no HDMI option on my Dvd as it is, well, old school. Bought a toslink optical cable. Got the sound through from TV to my HT but my issue is it's not giving a surround sound, just working as 2.1 and not 5.1. I think I'm missing something. Again, Please bare with me as I am not a tech specialist. Thank you

What is it you are watching that is not giving you 5.1? Normal TV shows are not 5.1 encoded. You will need to be viewing something like a film to obtain 5.1. Try watching one of the movie channels, and also look at the surround sound mode options on your home theatre system.

Check the TV audio menu. You may need to change the audio output type to get surround sound. Some TVs will not pass surround sound.
Select Dolby on the HTS.

Standard TV is Dolby Surround 4.1 matrixed surround, as are VCR tapes and CDs. A compatible receiver decodes this from the 2.1 from the TV, VCR or CD.
