Non stop calls to 18667092073

Recently, one of my directivo units (older series 1 style Philips model)
started calling this 18667092073 very frequently. It has nothing to do with
my daily calls - they are working fine. It will call this number back to
back - one minute apart every two hours. Sometimes it waits four hours.
Totals about 18-20 calls a day. I called directv, they passed me to the
tivo people. Nobody would tell me what the number is. They just suggested
a clean wipe of everything. I really hated to do this, but did on their
instructions. The problem has not gone away.

Anyone else seeing this pattern? I guess that I normally wouldn't recognize
it, but I have vonage and see all the calls in my log. I'm sure that it is
the directivo unit since when I unplug it, the calls stop.

Many folks have noticed the same situation.

The problem is not caused by your DirecTV DVR. The connect
dialog at the DirecTV servers has been modified and is "broken"
for calls from a 1st generation DirecTV DVR. Unplug the phone
cable to the DVR when the TiVo service call is not imminent.

The TiVo people can't fix the problem since it was caused by
a change at the DirecTV dial-in servers.

Oh, just marvy !!! Do you know if they are trying to fix this or if it is
just too bad for the 1st gen dvrs? Why does it even call in the first
place? Unless it is to report purchased items. Then, I guess I'll probably
be hosed soon when it can't report.

Other than the fact that it is just pretty dang old (relatively speaking),
it doesn't have any usb ports.

That's the main reason, at least if this is the DirecTV-side calls that
are causing problems. I believe they've also used a Caller ID-like
technology (but more powerful) to check to be sure all your receivers are
on the same line and to verify your location if you subscribe to certain
sports packages. I'm not sure if they do this any more, though.

As far as PPVs go, if the unit can't report its purchases, it'll give you
an error message when you try to buy more. There is a workaround, though:
Order your PPVs online from the DirecTV Web site. There's no extra charge
for this, and it works whether or not your unit can dial in. Of course,
it's not quite as convenient as using the remote, but it does work.
