I want to start from the beggining,so whoever helps me gets a better understanding.
I saved up $1,200 for this gaming rig over the course of 3 years,so you can see why I'm worrying as much as I am.
I downloaded a CPU temperature program that had been recommended on one of the threads on this forum, seeing only the first 3-4 comments about how it was good,I decided to download it without reading the warning that it had been compromised.
I'm now looking at my Norton performance section, where it lists detections and threats and performance alerts from the past.
On 12/10/2014,it says I installed the following.
Unturned
FileOpener
WSE-Vosteran
Hold Page
File Opener Packages
Extended Update
Reimage Repair
Reimage Protector.
Symptoms:Computer will randomly (Though rarely) turn on during the middle of the night or whenever, and stay on.(Note:This had been happening before I installed any of these programs,so I don't think it's a virus causing this)
I've lost 5 gb`s of hard drive space in a matter of weeks,I worry...a lot,and thus began my quest to purge my Gaming system.
I was aware of Unturned (A free game which I downloaded on Steam) and File Opener (which is a virus/Malware)
I immediately took steps to try and delete File Opener, which worked to a certain degree, but it was still in Uninstall/change a program menu until I clicked on it and hit Uninstall,I then clicked a little box in the bottom left corner an it's gone
Now fast forward to yesterday and today.I installed Malwarebytes and let it run,it found 27 malicious files, and me,always worrying, installed Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and ran that several times, came up clean, ran Malwarebytes several more times, that came up clean,I then installed Norton Power Eraser and tried following the steps for uninstalling File Opener,I failed, and decided to a System scan and a unwanted Application Scan.
The System scan did it's thing, and came back saying that my computer's registry was in bad condition,I did some research, and allowed it to repair it (It made a restore point before doing so) and it restarted,I logged back in and everything seems fine.
I ran both Malwarebytes scans and nothing came up.I was relieved, until I started to worry again, and that's what brings me here,am I being ridiculous in thinking that a virus/Malware could still be lingering on my computer,or is it still a possibility?
A speedy answer would be greatly appreciated!
Edit:I just went from having 792 gb`s of storage left,to 803,what just happened? I installed a World of Tanks update which said it was getting rid of a previous version, could that have something to do with it?
