Not staying charged

Well it could be a few things. First, try charging it when the laptop is turned off. Not hibernate or sleep but off. If it will charge then, the charger is probably the issue. Only working when off is a common symptom of that. It means the charger isn't putting out enough power to do both charging and powering the device.

Now if it doesn't charge then either, try the charger on a different device (one that it is compatible with) and try a different charger on yours (again, must be compatible).

Should the charger turn out not to be the issue, then it is likely either the battery needs replacing, or the charging circuit is not working correctly and that may mean the motherboard needs replacing.
