I think the editors are on vacation. The Windows Rot article smelled an awful lot like the Study: Vista Startup Time is Faster Than Win 7. Both written by Marcus Yam (way to pull 2 articles out of the same thing Marcus!).

Considering how many pop-up ads users encounter due to the malware that infests the typical Windows system, I don't think they'll notice a few more in Office. If the ads annoy you then just buy a better version. The online version will probably have the same.

I like Jane McEntegart's version better. More professional language... actually included a nice snip of the blog post. She didn't use annoying words like "batty". She didn't try to use quotes to make Microsoft quotes seem sarcastic... and lastly, didn't unnecessarily insinuate that Works was a piece of crap program (although I agree with you that it is).

Why bother with this? You can get OpenOffice FREE (free as in free speech, not beer... ) and won't have most of the annoying ads,etc of this free Microsoft version. Heck, OpenOffice is better than MS Office in certain ways, but it's not perfect either. It should work well for 80%+ people who just do basic word processing, etc.

Im sorry for novices weaned on Office,OpenOffice is not a viable alternative, i get no ends of complaints from users about it, might as well ask them to go to WordPerfect.

@jhansonxi: As a long time user of Windows I can say that yes, if you're an idiot you will have more malware then a street cat has fleas, but non-idiot people can enjoy a windows experience without any malware or viruses/trojans/worms... it's just a combination of good internet security and not clicking anything flashy and downloading only things you know are secure (i.e. not being an idiot)
