long time cable user..no more. is my toshiba 57hx83 (labled HDTV) capable of receiving digital broadcasts or do I need a convert box. I hooked up an HDTV but it could not find channels.

Solution
Since your TV is HD then make sure you get a ATSC Over the Air Tuner rather than just a converter box. The converter box is meant for non-HDTVs so will not give you a HD picture. you want a tuner with component video out since your TV doen't have HDMI. You might be able to use the DVI input on your TV if the tuner has stereo analog audio outs that will work when the HDMI is connected.
Something like this maybe:

I could only find one source that mentioned it has a NTSC tuner. I would suspect, given that reference, and its age that a digital converter will be required.

One sure way to find out, connect to your antenna and scan for channels. You'll know in a flash.
