Just recently my dad got a new phone with my help. New phone is Motorola G Power 2024. Old Phone was Samsung Galaxy A15 5g. Got new phone up and running, transferred sim card from old phone to new phone, using US Mobile service. Same service used on old and new phone. Looks like all contacts showed up on new phone instantly but not a single text message from old phone showed up. Not the most tech savvy when it comes to stuff like this. On the old phone, in the text messages app, he was signed into his google account. So thinking that once I signed into same google account on new phone, the text messages would show up but they didn't. Also thought they would have been tied to sim card as well. But maybe it can only be tied to either google account or sim card and not both? Did a live chat with US Mobile and basically all they said was give it time and maybe they will show up. But that has been days now and still nothing.

Is there still a way to get all the texts from old phone to new phone? Still have the old phone with all the texts, haven't done anything with old phone as far as removing accounts or anything. Would like to see if I can get the texts on new phone before I do anything like that. For the future if/when he has to switch phones again, what exactly is the process for getting the texts to transfer to new phone? Should the google account be signed out of on old phone before removing and transferring the sim card? Is this more of a issue that needs to be taken up with US Mobile or more of a google issue? Is this something I am doing wrong?

EDIT 1: I found there is a program called SMS backup and restore. Not familiar with this but looks like what I need to do. But one concern I have is the new phone already has new texts. Will the new texts stay after using SMS backup and restore to transfer the texts from old phone?

The new and old texts should co-exist since they are time stamped. Transferring should be safe, in that regard.

When you setup the new phone, was there an option to transfer info from a previous phone? That process should have taken care of the text message, pictures, etc transfer.

Even if there is new text from same number as old text?

I didn't give it no thought at the time but the phone was already setup. Is it normal for a new phone to be setup already? It was new and unlocked from amazon

Yes.

Somebody set the phone up. Was it you or your dad? If not, a factory reset should be performed.

Do either of you have the account login info currently on the phone?

Neither of us set the phone up. It was already setup when he got it. Just now realizing, even before coming here, a factory reset should be performed. Kind of stinks, already got the phone setup with accounts added and what not. So if I was to do a factory reset now, would all his contacts and current texts disappear?

When you say account login info, are you talking about dad's google account or what came on the phone?

The reason I ask is because during a factory reset, you'll be asked for the previous account info.

If you guys received a phone already setup, I would be concerned and, if me, I would try resetting the phone itself.

So maybe dumb question but when phone is setup for the very first time, you don't need previous account info, correct? And something I don't get, let's say I do a factory reset on used phone and wanted to sell it. The new owner would need my account info in order to get it setup?

As far as I can tell, there are no other accounts on the phone besides his. In settings, there is only one user and that is owner. Even so, I realize would be better off doing a factory reset. Not sure why I didn't think of this when the phone was already setup when he first got it. Since the phone was already setup, how can I tell if there was no previous owner that used it? Is there a way to tell if he is the only user of the phone?

Not the most tech savvy when it comes to phones, and come to think of it, not sure if I have ever done a factory reset on a phone. If I do a factory reset on new phone, what should I do? Should I take the sim card out? The main thing I worry about is his contacts. Don't want to lose that. He doesn't have many if any extra apps installed, his pics and videos are a part of his google account.

Leave the SIM in during reset. If you use the same Google account, the contacts will move over.

Selling a phone can be complicated as you noticed.

When setup for the very first time, you are correct. It is subsequent times that you need the info.

Wondering why the texts didn't move over. On new phone, should I sign out of google account before doing the reset? Contacts are most important thing for him, his old phone still has contacts as well. Would I have to contact US Mobile to get service going again? Worst case scenario I guess, I would have to put in contacts one by one which would take forever.

His old phone still has everything on it, contacts, texts, pics, google accounts. I don't do anything with old phone right away because of stuff like this.

Much appreciate the help.

No. You shouldn't need to contact your carrier. After reset, you should have option to transfer into from old phone.

Yes, make sure contacts are good in Google account.
Ok, just get a little paranoid when I have never done this before and not sure what to expect. Always worry something will happen.

Fairly straightforward process. You'll be okay.
Working on a factory reset now. Going through the setup on new phone and got to screen where it asks about transfer from old phone. It asks me to connect old and new phone with a cable and I did that with the cable that came with new phone, both ends are usb-c. Now on the old phone, a screen is up saying connected to new phone and says preparing. New phone says to check other device. It has said preparing for several minutes now. How long should that take? One thing I noticed is the old phone appears to be charging. On old phone, went into connected devices settings and didn't see anything about changing to file transfer.

Just leave connected.
Got through the transfer process. Finishing up the setup process on new phone and see something that has me a little worried. Came to a page that says tracfone wireless, asking about device pulse terms and conditions asking to accept and continue. Not using tracfone service, on old or new phone. Now on his phone he had before his old phone, he was using tracfone service and was bought as a tracfone service bundle but nothing was transferred from that phone. Have not accepted and continued yet.

New phone was bought as a new unlocked from amazon. The old phone was not bought through tracfone either. What can of worms did I just open? lol
