Open VPN Router Setup Help

I am interested in a VPN for my home network. My router is open VPN compatible and I am moderately computer literate but this VPN stuff is making my head spin and eyes glaze over

Router Netgear R6700v2 firmware V1.2.0.8_1.0.1

Can someone explain in English (not network guru jargon) what I need to do?
Do I need to purchase a service? A link on the router page takes me here

But I am hesitant to make router changes till I have a clue what I am doing or what to expect.

First, don't expect breakneck throughput with a VPN. The CPU in home routers just isn't powerful enough. Maybe 10-20Mbit. If a VPN is critical, then you should investigate getting a business class router that has hardware to improve VPN performance.
