How should I connect the optical input to the receiver that has no HDMI--from the TV or from the cable box? As presently connected sound plays from either or both the TV speakers and the home theater speakers but there is a slight delay so an echo when using both the TV and the home theater speakers.
Using Comcast Xfinity cable, newest Samsung 55 800 TV, Onkyo Receiver.

Solution
As stated, dont use your lowsy TV speakers if you have a surround sound (all TV speakers are lowy not just yours, no room to move air inside a thin TV bezel).

Since you have a non-hdmi receiver you connect all your source/input devices (game consoles, cable boxes, roku, blu-ray player, etc) to the TV, then connect the TV to your Onkyo via optical cable.

There is no easy way to fix this. Use one or the other but not both.

mute tv and use the other output

there is no logic on using both, if you have a external source, the idea is use the external for power and quality, the tv sounds usually bad
