Optoma RD50

I'm looking for any opinions on this DLP digital high-def set. It looks
comparable to other DLP sets I've seen from Samsung and RCA but has some
features (namely a very compact cabinet) that appeal to me. I'd like to
stick with DLP if I can, I like the brightness and detail I've seen from the
sets I've seen (I haven't seen the Optoma yet, its not retailed anywhere
here in the San Diego area)

You say it "looks comparable to other DLP sets," but you then say that you
have not seen the Optoma yet? I assume you mean the specs "look" similar.
You should really look carefully at the sets. There are many varaitions in
execution of the DLP technology that are not reflected in the
specifications provided.

The RD50 is discontinued. The replacement should be out and unless you
could get a very good deal on one, there is not much reason to look for the
RD50. It was an excellent performer (quite superior to the other products
that were current at the time, IMO) but now that numerous other companies
have DLP sets coming out, they will find a much more difficult market. I'd
give the new Mitsubishis a serious look, as well as the new Optoma. I doubt
that you will find much to like about the Optoma in the currentl market,
however.
