OS for HP Laptop Celeron M 530 1.73 GHZ 1 GB RAM

Ok so a friend of mine gave me this laptop because he never used it and I'm beginning to see why. It may be just because I'm used to the overall speed of my gaming rig but who knows...

Right now I'm running Windows 8 because I read online that it can give life to an older machine but I am still seeing some lag, I was hoping to get it running smoothly... I will only be using it for browsing the web and Pandora but its having an issue even doing that.

So does anyone have any recommendations?? I've tried a distro of Linux but could barley get it to install.

Laptop came stock with vista basic, any help will be greatly appreciated!

Intel Celeron M 530 1.73 GHZ
1 GB RAM
System rating on Windows 8 is 3.1

1 GB RAM ... do you have any more hanging around?
XP might be the only windows OS to move on that machine.
Linux lite might be a way to go as well https/www.linuxliteos.com/download.html

I ran xp and for what ever reason it ran worse than both windows 7 and 8, not sure why... And to be completely honest I dont know much about Linux is that similar to the GUI on windows? I've only studied windows...
