You've obviously never taken a picture worth keeping in your life then.

Great.. 13MP on CCD/CMOS smaller than something found in a 3MP compact camera.

If they made a phone with a good sized CCD and bigger lense with small optical zoom, I wouldn't mind buying it. If they want a niche market they should go all out with the niche.

the two have been blurred for years now and my current Sony Ericsson C905 is one such example of a very decent 8MP camera (for a phone) with real flash that also makes calls (in fact it's a slider just like the Panasonic)

to the above poster why do you assume one would be printing?
the point of higher resolution is DETAIL.
more resolution allows more detail to appear.
your line of thinking would keep you in the stone age because why would you want a higher resolution monitor, stick to your 800x600 screen it's "good enough"

Why did they left the lens rings if there is not zoom? It's not exactly good for fashion, am I mistaken?
Cool merge.

My phone has a crappy camera in it, but by far the worse issue for picture quality is all the stuff which gets inside it due to me carrying it with me 24x7. Does this camera phone have better protection (I can't even see a lens cover) or will it be just a great way of taking detailed pictures of fluff and dust?

Says a sour-graping iPhone 3GS owner...

[citation][nom]LePhuronn[/nom]You've obviously never taken a picture worth keeping in your life then.[/citation] Have you ever considered the fact that 30" monitors are only 4MP?

For 5x8 prints, 4MP is plenty. For 11x17 prints, 4MP is still good enough.

Great idea and gives people a choice that expect a bit more from the built-in camera of any given phone. Sadly, Panasonic is playing the meaningless number game and at 13 MP the photo sensor is challenged to capture better pictures with such small photo cells to work with. Nevertheless, better optics (compared to a phone) will help to get an edge over the camera phone but of course won't match a real camera (not even talking about dSLRs).

True, kind of. In my experience 3 - 4 MPx is a bit low for anything bigger than 5x7 photo prints. Of course the 13 MPx in this package are likely to be riddled by blur and noise to effectively render a picture quality that's probably closer to 6 MPx in this package.
However, marketing of camera phones still harps on MPx rather than picture quality. Fortunately, digital cameras are slowly realizing that MPx isn't everything.

THERE IS AN OPTICAL ZOOM !!! JUST HAVE A LOOK AT THE PANASONIC WEBSITE. Close-up pictures of the Lumix Phone show that its lens is an F:2.8/4.6 !!!

+1

The noise of such a small sensor will overwhelm the resolution @ 13MPx. Heck, my Rebel is *only* 8MPx and takes great photos. I also have an Olympus PnS that has 10MPx but I restrict to 5MPx. I honestly think that 5MPx is adequate for a phone and most PnS cameras. I would like to see bigger and less noisy sensors before more MPx.

Man..my point and shoot just sucks compare to the MP to these phones but i can't see anyone printing anything larger than 11x17 from their phones. They should improve on the zoom lens of these phones instead of MP. Everyone is so caught up on the MP market that people don't really know the advantage/disadvantage of it.

Id actually like to see it, I found a Panasonic Lumox in a big lots amd only got it cuz it was cheap and I LOVE Panasonic TVs, Turned out to be on of the BEST pount and shoot cameras Ive picked up, I work in a photo dept @ work and for the price and quality of the Lumix there some of the best cameras.
So id like to see it and i would get one IF it had a slide down keyboard (Most ppl do a lot more txtin than takin pics).

What they need now is a dSLR with a built in phone and a detachable bluetooth ear piece. that way no need to carry your phone while you have your dSLR and you don't have to look stupid with a big ass camera up against your face as long as you are using the bluetooth. Hell, the camera battery itself can keep the ear piece charged while its "docked". Do I have to think of everything?

you fail ... one of the numbers is focal lenght, the other is aperture (hard to tell which is which in this chip format). this is no zoom ...
