Panasonic PT-50DL54 DLP

Ok, I was dead set on a mits 55", then I saw a LG DLP. I have researched DLP
for a week now, and my choice lies between getting a mits medallion 55" crt
rptv and the panasonic PT-50DL54 dlp. The panny uses the new HD2+ chip, and
should display great contrast. It also uses an 8 segment color wheel as
opposed to 6 on older models.

We watch a lot of dvds and play a lot of videogames here at the house. I
will get digital cable when I purchase the TV.

Would love to hear from anyone who has an opinion to express that may help
me with my buying decision. As always, thanks in advance.

You should look at the Mitsubishi DLP units. My initial impression is very
favorable.

Go find a Toshiba 52HM84--DLP--HD2+ chip and a bunch of other stuff
and the bulb warranty is 1 year--everyone else is 90 days.

I'd suggest checking that assumption. Some are 90 days, some are a year.
Also, some cover a service call to replace it, some make it a user
replaceable item.

That would be my first choice, but A) the mits is gonna sell for $1000+
dollars more than the panny comparing at my local showroom, and B) the entry
level mits DLP has a screen that redefines the word GLARE. The nicer mits
(725) has an anti-glare screen but now we are talking $4000+ dollars and I
can nab the panny for around $2700.
The reason the panny caught my eye is the HD2+ chip and 8 segment color
wheel, which no one else can touch at the price.

So how does the Panasonic LOOK? Who cares about which chip it has, the
bottom line is what kind of pix it produces! At that much of a difference
in price they are either cutting corners somewhere or they are trying to buy
some market share. If the later then it might be a good buy.

Given the mits has a long standing reputation of reliability and good
quality, where would you rate the Panasonic and Toshiba?

I would rate them similarly in reliability. Quality in the DLPs is too
early to tell. In terms of customer relations Mitsubishi is by far the
better choice. In terms of parts supplies Mits and Pan have been better
than Toshiba in recent years, at least in the US. With a new technology
like the DLP sets, I'd give yourself a few months to make a good choice.
There is no telling what quirks we might find in all of these new products.

I have seen every manufacturer make a dog here and there. I have also seen
in every technology that has come along in the past 25 years a tendency for
people to assume that because a product is based on xxxx-technology it has
to be good or because this or that chip is used it must be the best choice.
In every case, there is much more to the story. Do your homework and ask
the tough questions.

Like what? It would have to be very good to have to put up with JVC as a

I'm not buying one til xmas. Ultimately pq will be the majority of the
deciding factors, but I am trying to educate myself about the technology and
the history of the brands. I have always owned Sony crts up til now so my
experience has been limited.

Anyway thanks for your responses, they have been a big help. I have several
months to make a choice, and it looks like whether it's a Panasonic or
Toshiba DLP or a Mitsubishi CRT I will be getting a good product that will
massively enhance my family's home theater.

Michael,
I always recommend that smart shoppers should ask the tough questions
regarding service. Get the parts prices for all of the major boards, the
lamp, the light engine, and find out exactly who will be the service agent
for each product. Compare their experience, policies, pricing, and
attitude. Best case is to find a dealer with his own service department.
Since this can be tough, make sure you know who the independents are who
will be servicing the product and understand what the out-of-warranty costs
might be. Compare extended warranties and read the fine print. Decide
whether it makes sense based on the cost, the possible cost of repair, and
your tolerance for risk.

Good luck and keep asking questions. Also, understand that the DLP sets
will be the hottest product in stores at x-mas, so you might want to keep an
eye on inventories and prices...supplies might get short that time of year.
2005 will likely see the prices drop as inventories start to pick back up
and production capacity smoothes out.
