Why is 8K not 8192x4320, but rather 7680x4320? 4K was double the dimensions of 2K, why is 8K not double the dimensions of 4K?

8k does not represent a single fixed resolution or aspect ratio, and neither does 4k. There are a set of standards, and 7680x4320 is one of them.

Not all 4Ks are 4000+ horizontally either. The term 4K is an umbrella term for 3800 to 4100 ish (sorry cant recall the numbers)

The reason is that, there multiple studios and industry players who are testing these different variety. Also there is the aspect ratio. For hollywood, the aspect ratio is different than say broadcasting etc... Its like how we had 16:10 widescreens and then 16:9 became popular

Now this is something worth to sell a kidney for.
Not to mention the other kidney will eventually required to sell off to pay electricity bills. 😀

[citation][nom]rebel1280[/nom]Half Life 3 would look perfect on this[/citation]

Odds of me being able to afford it and Valve actually releases HL 3 are about the same...

[citation][nom]alvine[/nom]it would be cool to see some games on it *cough* crysis *cough*[/citation]
Finally, a Crysis joke that we can take seriously! lol

Man... I want something at this resolution.... The future looks good :)

And I was thinking, why they don't try to work on other possibilities (like holographic displays, glasses free 3d tech & etc.) instead of improving resolution? Is 8K really worth it?Worth all the R&D,money and hard work? Why they don't put that hard work on other aspects?

1920x1080 panels arranged in a 4x4 grid... !
Keep in mind that video/movie resolutions have nothing in common with old style PC resolutions like 640x480 etc. but are historically based on the dimensions of the various film sized used as well as the optical resolution methods (including some that 'squeezed/de-squeezed' movies for super wide screen effects). Do a search for "Anamorphic widescreen" for more details !

For tv watchers what is the point? None of the major cable, sat, and telecoms are broadcasting in 1080p. Everything is in 720p or lower. Yes there are maybe a few 1080p channels but it is not enough to even justifying buying a tv with 1080p. Blu-ray, okay but anything else is nonsense. I am keeping my tube until Hollywood finally standardizes everything to 1080p. However if you are a major PC gamer then that is another story...

We would have been here years ago were it not for patent trolling. SED would have been awesome. flat panel form factor, crt refresh.

I'm planning on upgrading from my current 60" 1080p TV in a few years and I'd like to get one in the 70-80" range, but at 1080p the pixels will just be too big. I really hope that at least 2k displays (preferably 4k) are out at reasonable prices by then.
