HI
I have been tinkering with this puzzle. So far I have achieved a partial
solution. My Dell came with burning software but not authoring
software.Anyway I was able to achieve the following

My dvd on my computer and tivo recognize dvd-r. With that beint said.
I recorded a show from my tivo took the disk out and played it in my
computer. Everthing ok so far.

I then editied it created chapters ectra ectra. saved it to disk and tried
it on my tivo and it does not recognize the disk.

Oh one more thing. Other stand alone dvds do recognize the created disk.

I dont understand two things
why doesn't tivo recognize the disk even if it is a dvd-r?
Am I saving it incorrectly?

Also.. a possible solution ..

My tivo has networking capabilities -- limited -- . It also supports USB2 I
think. If I used a USB cable would the computer not see the tivo as an
"External" hard drive. With that being said I could save the edited copy
back to the tivo's hard drive.

This is a long winded solution but it will allow me to play the disk in the
tivo unit
However

IS THER ANY AUTHORING SOFTWARE THAT IS TOTALLY FREEWARE?
if you had to buy software which one would you get that does the job and is
reasonable to cut commercials out.

Hmm, that is indeed interesting. Glad you included that last point, it
rules out a lot of things. There must be something that the Tivo
doesn't like about that DVD. Did you use the same brand of DVD's for
both burns (the one in the Tivo, and the one in your computer)?

No, the only thing you can do with your Tivo's USB ports is network it.
The video files are not stored in a format that your computer can
understand, and the Tivo does not support being attached as an external
storage device.

I hope someone else can help.

FWIW, I've burned non-compliant discs which will not play in my Toshiba
SD-H400, but will play in my $20 player which will play (poorly) just
about everything I put in it. IOW, it's still possible the disc was
authored incorrectly.

The only freeware authoring software I've used is command-line
dvdauthor, which has a windoze version.

If TivoToGo is available for your machine, that and the Sonic software
would be the *easiest*, but not necessarily the best, method.
