Password problem with Dell and Windows 7

My parents have an old Dell with Windows 7. They bought it used but they have been using it for over a year now. A couple days ago it started asking for a password to continue logging in.

I went in thru setup and there are no passwords listed to either change or delete so how can it possibly be asking for a password?! How do I get passed this screen?

did they get a phone call from windows technical support saying their computer is infected as that happened with a customer as windows technical support put a windows password on it?

Also, can you access this system in Safe Mode as the Administrator?
