mom fell for the phone scam that said she had a virus and let them into her computer then refused to pay them to fix it . Now internet and sound will not work. She has Win 7 should she reinstall W7 or what?

Solution
1.Turn off the computer.

2. Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

3.Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.

4.Under I need help immediately, click System Recovery.

5.When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:

•If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.

This now being a full week after the weirdness....a wipe and reinstall would have been done in a day.
That's what *I* would do, anyway.

A wireless dongle uses a USB connection to connect to your router and allow Net access. An add-on ethernet card will do the same if there's a spare slot in the box. a

when I try to connect it says not connected to a network and it can't identify the problem, If I view detailed info it says No issues detected. If I try to pick a different network the box comes up blank and no networks

YEA it worked the internet and sound are both working Thank You All for the much appreciated help.
Now is there anything I can do to keep this from happening again except for keeping her from doing this again. Isn't there someplace to tick that won't let anyone have remote control of your computer

in the windows updates in the optional section is the update for remote access that I always hide. on these types of computer scams, they send you to a site to download & install a program to allow them access to the victim's computer, just don't do what they want. tell her to expect more phone calls every so often as I do but I also have fun playing with them too. what anti-virus & anti-malware programs did you install?

no problem. I do that manually & only selected folders, besides which this computer will be getting a fresh install of win7 64bit instead of the 32bit that I've been using now that I a newer data recovery program that works in 64bit mode.
