Pioneer DVL-919 vs LD-S9 or HLD-xx

I've done my own research, but its only been things I've been able to
read, not experience first hand.

I have a DVL-919 which was purchased as new, old stock in a clearance.
I'm not concerned at all about its DVD section (infact, I don't have many
DVDs), but mainly its laserdisc playback. Interestingly, the wikipedia
losely compares the DVL-919 and the LD-S9 and HLD-xx in favour of the
latter two.

I realise things such as this can get quite subjective. And, its also
based on the type of monitor or TV you are using as well as the media you
are playing. Most of my laserdiscs are WS, CAVs (Criterons and others).
I do not own any Hi-Vision or MUSE discs. My monitor is a Mitsubishi
PD-5050 Plasma Display.

My DVL-919 is interfaced to the PD via S-Video, so it is using its
internal filter. From what I've read I could probably use component out
(R, B, G) so that the PD's filter would be used. However, when I've
hooked it up that way, I only get a black and white picture and I never
really experimented with it too much as the manual infers that component
out can only be used with the DVD section. The S-Video picture is
actually quite good, so that is what I use.

People have also commented that the DVL-919 is 'noisey' when loading or
flipping. During playback of both CLVs and CAVs I'm never bothered by
noise .. I usually have the amp turned up fairly loud anyway ;-) ..
flipping discs on the DVL-919 takes about 5-7 seconds .. that doesn't
bother me either.

What I'm curious is how much of an improvement have others experienced
using the DVL-919 or comparable model and the LD-S9? LD-97 owners are
welcome to chime in if they've used a DVL-919 as well.

The component output on that player is only used for the DVD section,
not the LD section. You should try using the composite video output, as
your TV likely has a better comb filter than the 919.
