Possible problems with an ASUS F550JX (Wi-Fi and sound)

Hello guys!

I have some problems with my ASUS F550JX, that I have bought 4 months ago... I haven't used the laptop so much since I have bought it, and recently I started to use it for light browsing and a few movies.

The specs of the laptop:

- CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-4720HQ Processor
- RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz
- GPU: nVidia GeForce GTX950M 4GB GDDR3
- Screen: LED 15.6" Full HD
- SSD: 240GB Kingston SATA-III (replaced the 1TB 5400RPM SATA III HDD)
- Wi-Fi: b/g/n
- Bluetooth 4.0
- 10/100/1000 LAN

The problems are:

1. Compared to my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop, the Wi-Fi reception is very weak. Where the Dell has 4/5 or 5/5 bars, the Asus has only 2/5 or 3/5, with drops till 1/5 bars. The Dell has 5Ghz signal reception aswell, and the Asus has only 2.4Ghz. What is the solution to boost the Asus signal reception? Can I change the network adapter in the laptop? I was looking at "Intel Dual Band Wireless - AC 7260 2x2 AC+BT". Will it work on my laptop?

2. The sound is really awful... 🙁 The sound is like coming from a bottle and has no bass or treble, and it seems like it's mono... 🙁 Are there any ASUS F550JX around here? How is your audio output guys? Does my laptop have a problem?

I have the Asus X553MA

The wireless reception isn't great, to remedy mine i've been eyeing off a 'universal internal wireless antenna' on ebay.

I'm also thinking of upgrading the wifi card at the same time to one with 5ghz wifi.

The sound is not very good on mine either, I can only recommend a nice pair of headphones to remedy this.


Also it might be worth noting, i removed the HDD and installed an SSD, it's a much nicer experience.

I believe an Intel Wireless AC 7260 will work without any bios mod but you will have to check this, it will then give you dual band AC. Have you checked all the crappy settings on the sound card? Are you using windows drivers or Realtek (I believe its a Realtek card)??

The laptop has warranty, and I cannot open it... I believe that the antenna is hidden behind the display. This means I should open the screen case too... Would I succed with only changing the wireless card? By the way... with the default antenna will I find 5Ghz networks on the Intel 2.4/5Ghz network card? Will the bluetooth still work (IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO ME!).

With the sound problem I will buy a bluetooth rechargeable speaker, and that's it...

Where can I find if the wireless card will work by default? Is there any chance that it would cause me instalation problems?

I have the default sound driver provided by Windows 8.1 X64 (genuine, that came with the laptop). What settings?

- Will I have a Wi-Fi boost on 2.4Ghz? (I don't want to replace the antennas)

The intel 7260 is dual band so you will be able to connect to the 5Ghz channels.
It also has BT
Performance on the 2.4Ghz spectrum will greatly depend on your environment
You will need to do some research to see if the 7260 is white listed on your bios yourself 😉

For the love of God!! I have spent 5 minutes on line and found that Asus do not whitelist in the BIOS so that card will work. People on here try and help others but a little bit of "helping yourself" wouldnt go a mis. Your welcome.
