problem with HD

One the my HD( where had my sampler sound) have lose, it is in the
bios, but it is " no assing" in partición magic.
It have happen when reboot my PC.
Please help.

Hi Fran,

I'm sorry you are having problems, loosing a hard drive can be really
stressful.

While there are things you 'could' try, everything that you do to the hard
drive now could make it even more difficult to recover the files in case
what you try doesn't work. It's best to NOT do ANYTHING unless you are
totally sure what you are doing and what the risks are.

If the files you need to recover are critical and you don't have any backups
you should weight the cost of having a professional hard drive recovery
service try to retrieve them for you verses the cost in time and materials
to recreate all of your sampled sound files.

Also, giving more specific details about your computer will make it easier
for people to give you advice, like :
what operating system are you using? ( Win98, Win98SE, Win2K, XP, XP Pro,
Unix, Linux, etc )
what operating system service pack was installed?
what file system was used on the hard drive ( FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, etc )
what hard drive brand and model?
what version of Partition Magic?
what happened right before it died?
etc

You may want to post your question in one of the computer hardware oriented
groups also. ( like alt.comp.hardware etc )

Having recently spend some time using a variety of tools for some of my
customers, I can offer the following advice:

1. Acronis Disk Director 9 is excellent for partition related recovery
issues. Runs within Windows. More powewrful than equivalent suite from
Paragon and much more powerful than anything from Symantec/Norton.

2. I bought and liked Partition Table Doctor (runs in FreeDOS)

http/www.ptdd.com

This tool is very powerful and offers reconstruction techniques not
available in most other tools. Highly recommended.

3. GetDataBack from www.runtime.org was excellent and resulted in perfect
restoration of files, as opposed to Easy Recovery Pro, which restored some
files in corrupted form. That said, Easy Recovery Pro has always been a good
workhorse tool in most situations. Both apps run within Windows.

4. Spinrite 6.x is the industry standard recovery tool for data etc,
particularly FAT data (runs in FreeDOS)

Hi Fran,

when a hard drive fails, it may still register in the BIOS. It depends
on the nature of the fault.

First important thing. Don't panic ! Don't make any adjustments you
aren't sure of, it will probably make things worse.

I don't know Partition Magic much. I don't understand the message " no
assing" - that makes no sense.

I once 'los't a HD for a few days as a result of a the DOS *fdisk*
program causing a problem due to incorrect master / slave settings.

I carefully considered the options. In my case, Norton Utilities was
able to diagnose the problem. It said something like 'do you have a
missing partition ?'. I answered yes. It then asked 'was the partition -
followed by partition info' . Again I said yes. It asked 'would you like
to restore this partition ?' . I said yes - and it was back !

So all may not be lost. I haven't used the latest few versions of Norton
Utilities but they certainly used to be excellent at this kind of thing.

You might not be to out of luck. I can't really tell if it's something
like you accidently deleted the drive or if the drive failed. It maybe
your drive is just super fragmented. Or maybe some Directory
corruption. It depends on what happened. If it's clicking thats a
really bad sign. If it is clicking, I think it was Mr. Rivers that
recommeneded it, freeze the drive in your refrigerator freezer. I
thought it weird at first but it has saved about 10 drives and is the
proceedure of choice now at work when disk failure occurs. Good luck.
