processor slows to .5GHz

Hello all,
My Dell laptop will all of a sudden slow to .5GHz for no apparent reason. I can reboot and it does not clear it. I have to remove the battery and disconnect and wait 15 minutes and then boot wihtout the battery. It then clears and I can put the battery back in and it will not get into this state again for some time.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? I cannot find anything on Dells's site.

The above speed is 0.5GHz from a normal speed of 2.8GHz.

is this speed while the laptop is idle? if so this is normal.

^^^This, laptops do this to conserve energy as well as keep the system from heating up. Now if it's dropping to 500mhz while gaming then the laptop is overheating causing the CPU to slow down to avoid damage.
