projector audio issues

Hello all.
We bought an insignia projector.
We like to watch live streaming concerts on it.
But we are having volume issues
The sound quality of the projector is poor and too quiet. We tried hooking up an active surround sound speaker to it. It ended up being quieter than the projector speaker. And it shouldn't have been. It fact we had to have the projector speaker up to nearly maximum volume to get any sound out of the active speaker. The speaker was connected via the red and white audio cable.
Any ideas on how we can work around this?

You can connect the active speaker directly to your source. You might need an HDMI switch with audio extraction if you don't have RCA audio out or have more than one source
