PS3 -> Logitech 5500's

Not a fan of console games myself but have a PS3 downstairs for the kiddies (age 13-19). Setup includes the PS3, Sharp 1920 x 1080 Aquos TV and the Logitech 5500's. Connections are as follows, if I recall correctly as I set it up a year ago.

PS3 -> TV w/ HDMI
TV -> 5500's with TOSlink cable

Here's the issue:

1. Blue Ray movies in PS3 work well sound from 5500's is excellent (well excellent enough for a set of $250 speakers .... kids not allowed near Dad's audio system).

2. No sound at all out of 5500's during game play. Can't figure out why a BR disc thrown in the PS3 plays fine and yet a game disk produces nada.

What settings ..... where are they located ? Can you give me the drill down order ?

I don't play with the thing so wouldn't know where to start. I am assuming here:

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/index_sound.html

But again ..... I don't see anything in there that would let the BR movie have sound and the game have no sound. When watching TV or watching a BR movie in the PS3 on the TV there's sound both at the TV and surround sound system. Just popping a BR disk out and popping a game disk in shouldn't require different switch settings, cables, etc I woulda thought.

Theres seperate settings in the menu of the PS3 for sound output for bluray and for games.

Settings -> Sound Settings

Set to: Digital (Optical)
Supported Formats: PCM (2 channel, 44.1 KHz), Dolby Digital (5.1), DTS (5.1), AC3

Been there, done that. No luck.

The problem with that is, then ONLY PS3 stuff gets the sound.....nothing off any of the other input sources.

Then just get a and optical a/b switch and connect it like this: PS3 HDMI to TV and PS3 optical to A/B switch, Optical from TV to A/B switch, A/B switch optical to Z5500.

However before you do that, what does your PS3 firmware version? The new firmware is 3.0 so unless you haven't update the PS3 yet, you might want to do that first.

Just set the Z5500 to optical with PL2 Enhancement.

The PS3 was just replaced w/ a brand new unit (warranty) so I'm assuming it's "green" w/ the latest....will have the kiddies check tho.

As for the A/B switch, yeah that was on my possibilities list though some of these are a little pricey.

BTW, if ya ever need an oddball cable, if anyone has it or makes it, these guys do. Only place I have found that will make 3.5 mm SPDIF from laptop to normal SPDIF on 5500s
