Actually this is very smart by sony. The objective here isn't really to get more people to buy a PS3, the objective is to get people to buy a 3D TV which sony makes (what incentive does xbox have to include 3d on their system). Sony is very good at their trojan horse marketing (that is why Blue Ray won the HD battle). What a great idea to just update for free something like the ps3 which alot of people already have and now those people will be sitting there playing games wondering "wow, all I would need now is a 3-D TV and I would be playing this game in 3D"

I saw a demo at the sony store and the video was great but what was really impressive was the Motorstorm Pacific Rift demo. It was unbelievable, I have never seen anything like it. It is definately worth a trip to the mall to see it.

Unfortunately for me, we just finished upgrading all the tvs in our house to HD LCDs and I am not going to replace them for several years.

By the way, watch for prices of LCDs to come down drastically, because there might be a slight slowdown in sales with people anticipating the 3D tvs. If I was going to be buying a 50" LCD TV, why would I want to get one now when in the summer, you can get a 3d version?

It will be interesting to see how the tvs will change in the next couple of years.

[citation][nom]miaaron[/nom]4GB limit is FAT32, not PS3! I have several 40-50GB files on my PS3. I just transfer files over my network instead of an external hdd. Problem solved.[/citation]

I know the reason :)

Yes the PS3 should have used etx3 or 4 (or even NTFS).

Maybe it's my setup, but I can't stream any films larger than 4gb from my uPnP Mediatomb server on my 2.7tb linux server. It's quite irritating to have to boot up the (noisy) PC hidden behind my TV that is only there just to play the films the PS3 won't handle.

Or maybe my issue is just a transcoding thing - I'll shoot my mouth off after looking into it properly next time ;)

[citation][nom]Regulas[/nom]Why Sony descided to use the FAT 32 for it's file system is beyond me. ext3 or ext4 would have been superior.[/citation]

the reason is because the majority use Microsoft windows on there PC's and windows cannot read ext or ext4 out of the box so to say

[citation][nom]Ciuy[/nom]this is where the xbox 360 fails.... and the ps3 takes the lead...[/citation]

Dont you mean this is where the xbox 360 fails, then the PS3 manages to finally catch up after 2 or 3 years, then takes the lead... but still lags drastically behind the wii?

As much as I hate to admit it (Im an xbox guy) wii is by far and away the mot popular console, and the bluray/3d capabilities of the PS3 have just become that little bit more tempting for me....

[citation][nom]thepetey[/nom]The Source is my ps3, but I have had 5-6 blurays that dont work on my ps3, or that load then freeze. If you know a solution, I would love to hear it![/citation]

You can find the solution on this forum (http://forums.highdefdigest.com/blu-ray-video-game-consoles/97240-inglourious-basterds-ps3-issue.html)

Appearentely it is BD-live related probelm from Universal.
According the forum, you just need to unplug the internet connection while watching the movie.

Hope that will help.

if the play station passes the xbox or even starts nipping at its heals in sales after the xbox has had the commanding lead over it for the past 3-4 years then it only proves who is the better game company out of the two.

I'm just gonna throw this out there cuz it's one of the most popular applications(and free) for streaming media to a PS3. It's what I use for movies and it hasn't given me any issues(and even shows the movie thumbnails on the ps3).

http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/

I have only used it on PC but I know they added linux support. There is a big thread on it at avsforum in the ps3 section.

ps3 media server for linux works pretty good. I have it installed on my ubuntu media server and I use it because the ps3 doesn't play .iso files.

The main issue is that if you rewind, or forward a video, it screws everything up and you need to start over and there is no chapter skipping.

Maybe when many comercial devices come out with boxee this summer, maybe sony will come out with a better media application (but I wouldn't hold my breath).

I don't get it. What makes my Bravia 120Hz unable to make 3D? Don't you need goggles anyway? At a refresh rate of 120Hz, I'd imagine that it has the power to do 3D with Shutter glasses or something like that. I also have the PS3, so when the time comes, would I be ready?

Cool.
3D, physics, surround gaming, 7.1 sound etc. should all be industry standard. =)
I can deal with my work goggles all day, I can deal with some special glasses.

Hardware has surpassed software for a while now. We've been running the same quality games for years. So to compensate, we've just cranked 16xAA/AF on all games and playing them at ridiculous resolutions, and yet our high end cards still have room to spare. All these features just give us software a little more time to catch up and a excuse for us to buy modern cards (I want a GF100, but why when I max all my games at 60FPS with 16xAA/AF as is?).

We just need Ron Jeremy to do is some 3D high def porn on BluRay now. ;)

[citation][nom]mrmotion[/nom]I dont care about 3D I just want a PS3 that will play PS2 games so I can play Black again. What a concept eh?[/citation]

Man I'm sorry, but that argument is getting really tired. Just buy a PS2 on ebay for $40 and move on with life.

Wasn't ext4 released AFTER the ps3 came out?

[citation][nom]sliem[/nom]Why is PS3 using FAT32?[/citation]
The PS3 file system is not FAT32 but proprietary. It will read FAT32 formatted drives. NTFS has a license fee from Microsoft attached to it, and Sony is trying to keep costs down.

I'm all for support of ext3, but Windows doesn't support it natively. A much better choice would be exFAT. Expanded storage limits just like NTFS but without the processing overhead. Microsoft started to license it in December and I think Sony should pay up and roll it out.

I don't understand why both the player and display need to support 3D. Why can't the PS3 just send a 3D image to any display? Better yet, Why can't the media just be 3D? Like 3D Blu Rays? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt it just as simple as a separation of images?
