Laptop: Lenovo IdeaPad Z510
Owned for ~5 years

My laptop will randomly turn off immediately, with no warning. Once off, it will keep trying to turn on - the screen turns on and hard drive will make the usual clunking noise, but it rarely works for more than a few seconds.

I have taken the battery out because it was dead anyway and to make sure it wasn't the source.

About two years ago, I noticed that sometimes pressure on the area where the hard drive is could cause a similar shutdown. Recently, a similar effect happens and appears to be triggered by something as light as a headphone wire - but only sometimes.

Solution
It could just be a failing hard drive. I'd download crystaldiskinfo or hwinfo64 to check its health. When it is in the reboot cycle, how far into startup does it make it? Can you get it to boot into the bios?
